HISTORY ABOUT PLATJA DE ARO


Prehistory and Roman
The first settlements in the area of Pinell, dating from 2500 BC, in the Neolithic period. Remain as a witness in a dozen pit graves. Around 2000 BC, the late Neolithic and Chalcolithic during, set in the mountains of human groups and Vallvanera Treumal. The main witness to stay in this part of the Roman villa is Palol Plan, dated between I and IV centuries AD. Would have occupied an area of 10,000 m2, an important part of which correspond to patios and spaces not built. The villa exploited the natural resources of land, both agriculture and the cultivation of the vine, and the extraction of clay for making pottery. middle Ages
From the ninth century begins the repopulation of the territories of the Aro Valley, once recovered from the Saracens, making the terrain. The first settlers are farmers. It is not known exactly when the first settlement was established, although it appears in 881, King Charlemagne gives the bishop of Girona, Teuta, the territory of the Aro Valley, which has already begun extending population towards the coast.

The first documentary reference to UP Lantern (original name of Platja d'Aro) appears in 968. It is the rule of King Lothair, confirming Sunyer as abbot of the monastery of Sant Feliu de Guíxols as well as their possessions, among which include Lantern and his church.

Castle Benedormiens, origin of the town of Castell d'Aro, is documented for the first time in 1041 when the religious authorities, the nobles and knights of the land given to the monastery of Sant Feliu de Guixols custody of the castle, with obligation to protect wartime entire Aro Valley, which is an important part Lantern.

Although the Aro Valley is a fertile land for cultivation, the humble farmers are not the only inhabitants of the medieval Lantern. modern Era
The current legal status of the peoples of the Aro Valley dates only from 1858, when, after centuries of being part of a single municipality, separate in Santa Cristina d'Aro, Solius Romanyà Bell -place, Castell d'Aro Aro Lantern. So configured, broadly speaking, the birth of two towns today: Santa Cristina d'Aro and Castell-Platja d'Aro.

The turbulent political and social life in the second half of the nineteenth century shakes local life. The Revolutionary Period represents a break in the strict regulations and instituted universal suffrage in voting. In the elections of 1869, it is clear the federal and republican Empordà and lamps. contemporary Period
In 1916, Joseph Ensesa Pujadas, industrial flour based in Girona, swap debt for a baker of Sant Feliu de Guixols to a plot on foot hill S'Agaró. Simultaneously, even during the early twentieth century, the current Big Beach is totally unspoilt, with no tall buildings, and only a little more scattered inside the first houses set on the plain, far from Lamps district of UP. From the second decade of the twentieth century, begins a fledgling tourism development, but not until after the Spanish civil conflict are not the first tourist establishments, along with the houses of the existing second home of Pineda in Bas foster a growing summer colony.

Tourism development occurs with the final name change Lantern by Aro Playa de Aro (1962), the change in capital and the historic City Hall and inside Castle Playa d'Aro Aro (1962). The early years of the present century are characterized by the construction or modernization of public facilities such as the Civic Center Vicente Bou municipal waste, or Rodoreda Library Lakes Park in Platja d'Aro and the Multipurpose Room Castell d'Aro; as well as the improvements of this historic castle and Benedormiens; and works of preparation of Rampart S'Agaró that consolidates its distinct architectural character of the wild paths of the rest of the coastline of the Costa Brava.
